Houston to Dallas is roughly 240 miles straight up I-45. A recent full service move on this route was quoted at $4,000, a representative figure for a household on this lane, not a fixed price. Firefighting’s Finest Moving and Storage has run this route since 2001, with our own movers handling the load in Houston, the drive up I-45, and the delivery in Dallas.
Because we operate physical, fully staffed locations in both Houston and Dallas, an intrastate move like this one stays with our own movers the whole way, no transfer to a third party carrier along the way.
This is a Texas move, and Texas rules apply, not federal FMCSA rules. Because Houston to Dallas never leaves the state, it falls under the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles. Texas requires a written proposal before a single item goes on the truck, either binding or not to exceed, along with the Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move in Texas brochure. Texas movers must hold an active TxDMV license, and the certificate number has to be displayed on both sides of the truck. Ours is TX DMV 006869031C. Look it up in the TxDMV Truck Stop motor carrier lookup, an Active status is the whole test.
Founded in 2001 by Derrick Potter and Pat Dodson, both military veterans and firefighters, we bring the same discipline to every move on this route. Every mover is background checked and drug screened, and you get a written estimate before anyone touches a box.
Licensed and insured: TX DMV No. 006869031C. US DOT 2569610. MC #56316.

What a Houston to Dallas Move Has to Plan Around
240 miles up I-45 is straightforward driving, but this route still depends on what happens at both ends, not just the highway in between.
- 1Houston puts a clock on a truck at the curb.City Code Chapter 26 makes it unlawful to park or stand a commercial vehicle on the street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. except during active loading or unloading, and Section 26-96 bars large vehicles from parking on any residential street outside that. The truck works continuously in Houston, then leaves.
- 2Houston has no zoning, your street is governed by deed restrictions. There is no zoning map to check. What governs your Houston block is a private deed restriction, usually enforced by a civic association or HOA. That is who decides whether a truck can stage on the street, which is why we call the civic association or management company the same week you book.
- 3Dallas has its own truck parking code.Dallas City Code Sec. 28-80 and Sec. 28-81 similarly require a commercial vehicle to load continuously and leave, rather than stage on a residential street. High rises in Uptown and Downtown Dallas require a certificate of insurance, a reserved freight elevator, and an assigned dock.
- 4Two different truck size realities. Our trucks need at least 13 feet of overhead clearance and a surface rated for 26,000 pounds. That rules out many Galleria and downtown Houston parking garages, and some Uptown Dallas garages as well.
- 5Hurricane season overlaps peak moving months.Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. We watch the forecast on booked Houston departure dates and will reschedule rather than load a household into a storm.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving From Houston to Dallas
How much does a move from Houston to Dallas cost?
A recent full service move on this lane was quoted at $4,000. Treat that as a reference point rather than a fixed price, since it moves depending on the size of your home, packing needs, specialty items, access at both ends, and your date.
How long does a move from Houston to Dallas take?
Most of these load and deliver inside a single day. It is about 240 miles up I-45. Larger homes or full packing services can push it into a second day.
Is this an interstate move?
No. Houston to Dallas never leaves Texas, so it falls under TxDMV rules rather than federal FMCSA rules. A written proposal and the state’s Rights and Responsibilities brochure are required before loading.
Do I need a permit to park a moving truck in Houston or Dallas?
Neither city issues a residential moving permit, but both restrict overnight commercial vehicle parking. Houston bars commercial vehicles from the street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., and Dallas requires a truck to load continuously and then leave. High rises in either city may require a certificate of insurance and a reserved elevator window.
Do you offer storage if my Dallas home is not ready?
Yes. We can hold your belongings in climate controlled storage in Houston or in Dallas, whichever suits the dates you are juggling.
How far ahead should I book?
A month is a good default, and earlier for weekends, month end dates, or the summer peak. Hurricane season, June through November, is also worth planning around for a Houston departure.
